In 1999, the Oklahoma Genetics Advisory Council was formed to advise the Commissioner of Health on genetic
issues. This diverse group of 27 members includes clinical genetic and laboratory providers, primary care providers,
related specialists, Indian health representatives, clergy, consumers, insurance and community representatives, and
15 ex-officio members from Oklahoma State Department of Health programs and Department of Human Services. This
council meets three times a year with its seven committees meeting more frequently as needed.
Two of the seven committees are the Education Committee and the Family Advisory Committee.
The Education Committee is a diverse group of individuals that include members who are directly involved in
providing genetic services, individuals who refer patients for genetic services, and users. The goal of the
committee is to educate professionals and the general public to the current state of genetic knowledge, both in
clinical practice and research initiatives.
The Family Advisory Committee includes individuals with genetic conditions and parents of children with
genetic conditions. The goal of the committee is to represent the issues and concerns of individuals and families.
